Job Description and Person Specification
Volunteer ICT Support Worker
Location:
Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind, Earlsdon, Coventry CV5 6TH
Purpose of Role:
Volunteers are required to assist the ICT Worker to deliver supported computer sessions to people with a visual or dual sensory impairment. Support is provided on a one-to-one basis or in small groups of no more than five.
The people that currently use the sessions have varying degrees of computer knowledge but most use the computers for word processing documents, emailing friends and accessing information on the internet, including talking books.
We have five computers, equipped with various software packages such as JAWS (text to speech) and Zoom Text. Volunteers are not required to have previous knowledge of these packages as training will be provided once in the role.
Working Hours:
Computer sessions currently run Monday and Thursday and are allocated on a booking system, depending on centre user’s requirements. All sessions currently fall within the hours of 10.00 am and 3.30 pm, although this may be extended in future if required.
We would be grateful for volunteers who could give any amount of time per week to support the computer users. If possible, this would ideally be a minimum commitment of one hour each week and preferably on a set day and time. This will enable centre users to get to know our volunteers more quickly.
Skills and Requirements for the Role:
To undertake this role effectively volunteers will need to possess the following skills or attributes:
-
Basic computer knowledge, including Microsoft office and experience of using the internet
-
An interest in working with people with disabilities, particularly people with a sensory impairment
-
Willingness to learn about adaptive technology and software that is available to support people with a sensory impairment
-
A friendly, approachable and patient manner
