What is the aim of Supported Computer Sessions? The aim of the supported ICT sessions is to enable people to learn new computer skills, develop existing skills and access information in a supported environment. Sessions are tailored to the interests and abilities of the individuals, therefore session content and delivery will vary from person to person. ICT users that currently attend sessions use the time to read books, write autobiographies, word process documents, email friends and relatives, produce business plans and shop online, amongst other things. Where and When are Supported Computer Sessions Delivered? Computer Sessions are delivered from an accessible IT training Suite at Coventry Society for the Blind on Earlsdon Avenue South. Sessions last for either one or two hours at a time, depending on the preference of the individual.
Mondays: 10.15am-3.45pm
Thursdays: 10.15am –3.45 pm
Computer users are given an allocated session time which, as a rule, will remain the same each week for convenience. This time will be agreed with individuals in advance of them attending sessions. The advantages of keeping the same session times each week are that people do not have to worry whether machines will be available for use and it enables people to develop friendships with others that attend the sessions. Is there a cost to attend sessions?
Yes. In order to sustain sessions and cover basic running costs there is a charge of £2.00 per session.
Any one with a visual impairment can attend the computer sessions. This includes people who are deafblind and those with additional disabilities. We welcome people of all ages and current ICT users range from 28 to 86 years old. In instances where spaces are limited, priority will be given to people who live in the Coventry area but where possible we can also accommodate those from surrounding areas if required.
What Software and Equipment is provided?
Our accessible IT Training Suite is equipped with four computers, All the computers provide access to high speed broadband internet. The computers are equipped with various software packages, including JAWS 4.5 (text to speech software), Zoom Text, . We also provide a wide range of adaptive equipment, including large key keyboards and rollerball mice. All our machines and the accompanying software are regularly checked and maintained to ensure they are in good working order. However, we do hope to update some of our machines and software in the coming months if funding permits. Is Transport Provided?
Individuals are requested to provide their own transport to and from computer sessions as the Society does not at present have the resources to provide this service. Many of our IT users live locally to the Resource Centre and tend to travel either on foot, with friends or family or by Taxi or Ring and Ride. Coventry Society for the Blind is always trying to recruit volunteer drivers so if transport is a particular barrier we will do our best to find volunteer drivers if possible. Do I need prior computer knowledge or experience to attend?
We provide support to people with all levels of computer knowledge and experience, from people who have never used a computer before through to people who are more experienced with computers. We understand that learning new things about technology can be daunting for some people but we offer support throughout the learning process and we aim to create a relaxed and enjoyable environment where people feel comfortable to ask questions.
Who will be supporting me during sessions?
Volunteers will support these sesions in the IT suite. Our Volunteers are approachable, patient, understanding of people’s individual skills, interests and abilities and able to communicate with computer users in a friendly and appropriate manner.
