Coventry Resource Centre for the Blind Open Day 14th October 2021

CRCB is throwing open its doors to everyone

  • People who have sight loss and want to know more about what we do
  • Families and carers
  • People who are thinking about volunteering
  • Neighbours
  • Anyone at all who’s interested!

The day will run from 10am – 4pm with a special event in the evening at 7pm.

Volunteers and group members will be demonstrating how they do what they do and getting visitors to join in. So for example in the IT room we will show how PCs can be set up for people with low vision to use and inviting visitors to use Sim Specs, which simulate different eye conditions, to have a go themselves. The Devices group will show how you can talk to your phone and get it to do all sorts of things. The craft group will be demonstrating their talents (and selling a few of the things they’ve made). The Braille group will be getting people to try out tactile games and teaching how braille works.

There will be refreshments available and members of Music group will entertain from time to time. In addition there will be brief talks about what council’s Visual & Hearing Impairment Team does, on eye health by an optometrist, on Macular Degeneration by the local Macular Society group leader who lives with the condition herself.

The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress will be joining us from 2pm and will also hand out long service awards to some of our volunteers.

In the evening at 7pm the Creative Writing group will be launching its first book of collected works entitled Who Turned Out the Lights? In partnership with the Criterion Theatre in Earlsdon, actors will perform some of the poems and essays about the experience of sight loss and living in a sighted world. Entrance is free but tickets are limited.
