10 facts you need to know before volunteering
- You will be required to complete an application form and to attend an informal interview.
- You will be asked to provide the names of 2 referees. In return you should be able to receive a reference on the basis of your own voluntary involvement with an organisation. You will also be required to complete a CRB check.
- Volunteering should not necessarily affect your entitlement to benefits. Reimbursement of expenses incurred whilst volunteering should also not affect your benefits, check with your local Job Centre or Benefits Agency if you are uncertain.
- If you do take on voluntary work make sure that you understand what is expected of you and to whom you are accountable.
- Don’t over commit yourself only offer as much time as you are able to give regularly. This may determine your involvement and the minimum/
maximum length of your involvement.
- You will be required or recommended to undertake relevant training – find out how much and how often.
- In the interests of health and safety at work your co-operation in implementing the organisations standards will be necessary.

- Your work is undertaken by agreement on the volunteer part. You may feel able to say no to specified tasks if you don’t wish to be engaged in them.
- If you are unable to keep arrangements you have made, please ensure to inform the person to whom you are responsible i.e. Centre Manager. Alternatively inform the Receptionist who can pass a message on in the absence of the Manager.
